The question of the leading ecommerce solution is as old as e-commerce itself. Even though, in our opinion, no generally valid statement can be made here, since the choice of the appropriate technology depends on a multitude of factors and parameters, it is nevertheless interesting to deal with development and trends based on such studies. This year again, the retail institute EHI together with the market research company Statista examined the top 1,000 online retailers and evaluated the technologies used here using the browser add-ons Wappalyzer and Builtwith.

A very exciting development is clearly visible here: Regardless of the technology used, according to this study a shift has emerged in recent years from the previously very frequently used individual developments, which some time ago were still used by more than half of the top 1,000 web stores in Germany, to more and more standard solutions.

From our point of view, this development is quite understandable for several reasons and, especially from a business management point of view, is increasingly the more advantageous approach in the long term:

  • The range of functions and performance of standard solutions has improved massively over the last few years
  • Maintenance and further development of individual solutions are usually much more complex and expensive than with standard solutions
  • With standard solutions the manufacturer takes over the support and partly also the operation which can mean an enormous gain in security
  • Due to the enormous dynamics of the market and the constant emergence of new technologies and requirements, this can often only be met with a correspondingly high level of development power, which is usually limited in the case of individual developments
  • Especially open source technologies have already benefited in the past through corresponding communities and a large number of developers. In our opinion, this trend will continue to increase in the future.

With the exception of Shopify, which is included here for the first time in Germany, there are no major changes in the top 10 solutions within this 2020 study. So all the “usual suspects” are represented here again this year accordingly. However, there are some surprises.

One of these surprises concerns Magento. According to the study, the e-commerce solution is the biggest winner within the last 12 month and can not only maintain its long-standing leading position as the most frequently used ecommerce solution among the top 1,000 online merchants in Germany, but also achieve the biggest growth among the solutions examined.

According to the EHI-Statista study, Magento continues to lead the ranking, which is not a big surprise because the software has been one of the most frequently used solutions in both the B2C and B2B environment for many years, not only in the German-speaking countries, but globally. What is surprising here from our point of view is the development in the last 12 months. Magento was able to increase its market share by 1.6 percentage points to 15% last year, which is by far the biggest increase within the Top10 store systems in absolute terms.

This is where Adobe’s footprint and latest product developments comes into play as well as the increasingly important issue of the best possible digital experience. This is a topic that Adobe has been addressing for some time now, and which it is perfectly serving with the so-called Experience Cloud. The Experience Cloud is a collection of market-leading solutions for content, marketing, analytics, advertising and e-commerce, all integrated on a cloud platform, which can be used individually and in their entirety, interact with each other, and together with services, support and an open ecosystem, enable impressive customer experiences. Magento was successively integrated into the Experience Cloud by Adobe after the acquisition in spring 2018. Especially in combination with the Adobe Experience Manager (AEM), which is also part of the Experience Cloud, this results in an enormously powerful combination for next generation e-commerce in B2C, B2B and B2B2C.

We would be happy to show you what the Adobe Experience Cloud can do for you and how you can benefit from it.

In general, it can be said that the topic of e-commerce in both the B2B and B2B environment has grown continuously and massively over the last few years, as can be seen from the following chart. In 2019, the 50 billion mark was surpassed, and this trend will continue due to the corona situation, which will provide e-commerce with additional tailwind in many industries.
